Applications Invited for Getty Research Grants for Scholars

Deadline: November 1, 2004

The grant program of the J. Paul Getty Trust ( http://www.getty.edu/ ) provides support for a diverse range of projects in the history of visual arts and cultural heritage.

The trust is currently accepting applications for its Research Grants for Scholars program. Through this program, the trust provides residential fellowships at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, as well as nonresidential grants to support scholars throughout the world.

Grants are available for scholars who are in residence at the Getty Center in the following categories:

Getty Scholars and Visiting Scholars: Support for established scholars working on projects related to a specific theme. The theme for the 2005-06 academic year is Duration: The Persistence of Antiquity. Getty Scholars and Visiting Scholars grants are for established scholars, artists, or writers who have attained distinction in their fields. Getty Scholars are in residence for the entire academic year. A salary-replacement stipend is awarded, up to a maximum of $75,000. Visiting Scholars are in residence for shorter periods of time, usually three months. A monthly stipend of $3,500 is awarded, up to a maximum of $10,500.

Pre- and Postdoctoral Fellowships: Support for emerging scholars to complete work on projects related to the Getty Research Institute's annual theme. Recipients are in residence at the Getty Research Institute, where they pursue research to complete their dissertations or to expand them for publication. Predoctoral fellowship applicants must have advanced to candidacy and expect to complete their dissertations during the fellowship period. Postdoctoral fellowship applicants must have received their degree no earlier than 1999. Predoctoral fellows are in residence for the entire academic year and receive a stipend of $18,000. Postdoctoral fellows are also in residence for the academic year and receive a stipend of $22,000.

Library Research Grants: Partial, short-term support for costs relating to travel and living expenses for scholars whose research requires use of specific collections housed in the Research Library at the Getty Research Institute. Grants are intended for scholars at any level who demon- strate a compelling need to use materials housed in the Research Library, and whose place of residence is more than eighty miles from the Getty Center. Library Research Grants range from $500 to $2,500. The research period may range from several days to a maximum of three months.

Conservation Guest Scholars: Designed to support new ideas and perspectives in the field of conservation, this pro- gram provides an opportunity for professionals to pursue scholarly research in an interdisciplinary manner across traditional boundaries in areas of wide general interest to the international conservation community. Grants are for established conservators, scientists, and professionals who have attained distinction in conservation and allied fields. Conservation Guest Scholars are in residence at the Getty Center for three to nine consecutive months. A monthly stipend of $3,500 is awarded, up to a maximum of $31,500.

Grants for Nonresidential Scholars are designed to allow scholars the flexibility to pursue their research wherever necessary to complete their projects. Grants for Non- residential Scholars are available in the following categories:

Postdoctoral Fellowships: Support for outstanding scholars in the early stages of their careers, allowing them the flexibility to travel and study wherever necessary to undertake their work. Grants support interpretive research projects that make a substantial and original contribution to the understanding of art and its history. The Post- doctoral Fellowships in 2005-06 are designed for scholars whose doctoral degrees in art history have been or will be officially conferred between January 1, 1999, and January 1, 2005. Candidates who hold doctoral degrees in fields outside art history are eligible to apply if they can demonstrate that their work promises to make a sub- stantial and original contribution to the understanding of art and its history. Fellowships provide a $40,000 stipend for a twelve-month period.

Collaborative Research Grants: Support for teams of scholars to pursue interpretive research projects that offer new explanations of art and its history, and to pursue research in preparation for scholarly exhibitions. These grants are intended to support established scholars who have attained distinction in their fields. Grants are generally available for research periods of one to two years. Grant amounts vary.

Curatorial Research Fellowships: Support for the profes- sional scholarly development of curators by providing them with time off from regular museum duties to undertake short-term research or study projects that advance the understanding of art and its history. The fellowships are reserved for full-time curators who have a minimum of three years' professional experience and who are employed at museums with art collections. Applicants may apply for a research period of one to three consecutive months. Fellowships provide stipends of up to $3,500 per month toward salary replacement and travel expenses of up to $5,000 for a three-month period.

Scholars of all nationalities are welcome to apply. See the Getty Web site for complete program details, eligi- bility requirements, and application procedures.
