Leadership training programme for Photojournalists

ALTEMUS (www.altemus.org) and VII (www.viiphoto.com) are pleased to announce a training programme for young photojournalists from Central-Eastern Europe, South Eastern Europe, the Baltics, the Newly Independent States and Turkey.

Altemus is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to helping young people from emerging democracies develop their leadership potential.

VII is a photographer-owned photoagency, with a wide editorial remit but specialising in coverage of human rights issues and world affairs.

Programme Overview
The goal of this programme is to help develop the leadership and photographic skills of young photojournalists from the target regions. The methodology employed includes brief theoretical presentations, case studies, role-playing, simulations, coaching and outdoor experiential exercises. Active participation and in-depth reflection are critical to the success of the training.

The programme will take place in late Summer - early Fall 2004 in France. It is 16 days in total and is comprised of:

A) Ten (10) days of skills training in:

  • Self-awareness
  • Visioning, goal - setting and positive thinking
  • Concentration and visualization
  • Cultural awareness
  • Communication (including presentation skills)
  • Conflict management
  • Stress management
  • Organisational, planning and problem-solving skills
  • Overview of International Humanitarian and Human Rights Law

B) Five (5) days of photographic training covering:

  • Expanding narrative skills
  • Addressing issues in a comprehensive and sophisticated manner
  • Editing and marketing work using traditional techniques and the latest technology

Before the programme each participant will be given an assignment to complete in their home country that is mentored by one of the tutors. The Internet will be used as a means of editing and communication. During the workshop each student's approach and execution of their assignment will be assessed, critiqued and edited.

Each participant will also work in the field with a tutor to address their specific areas of weakness. Special guests such as photo editors, museum and exhibition curators, book publishers, digital and analogue darkroom specialists will make presentations in the evenings.

At the conclusion of the entire training programme, students will make an audiovisual presentation of their work to the public. Photo exhibitions of their work are also envisaged.

Programme Costs
Travel Costs
Applicants selected for the training must pay their own travel costs return to the interview and the training. A limited number of scholarships will be available to cover travel expenses.

Accommodation Costs
Altemus and VII will cover all costs on site (food, lodging, travel expenses, film, processing etc.)
Selection Process
Selection is based on a merit based open competition. A panel of representatives from Altemus and VII will review all eligible applications. All applicants will be notified of their status by April 1, 2004. Semi-finalists will be invited to interviews in either Paris or a major city in Eastern Europe in March. Sixteen (16) applicants will be invited for the training; seven (7) will be placed on the waiting list.

Criteria
The jury will apply the following criteria when evaluating applications.
The applicants must:
1. Be between 20-35 years old at the time of the application deadline
2. Be a citizen or current resident of one of the countries targeted
3. Be working as a photojournalist (on staff or freelancer)
4. Be working in his/her country of citizenship/ residence
5. Speak English/ Russian
6. Show leadership experience or potential

Photojournalists invited to the training agree to give the rights to 3 photographs (in a high definition CD) achieved in the framework of the training to Altemus and VII for public relations and fundraising purposes related to their nonprofit work.

Entry is free. The on-line application and portfolio must be dated or postmarked no later than February 15, 2004.

Dossier contents:

  1. A letter of support from your employer (if you are employed) granting a leave of absence with pay for the entire training period.
  2. A printed copy of your completed and signed application form.
  3. Your portfolio - twenty-four (24) photographs of a journalistic/ documentary nature and taken within the last year. Each photo should have a caption stating what the story is about. Photos may be in black and white or color; on paper, prints from digital work or laser photocopies. The format must be A4 unbound.
    Place all of the above documents in an envelope marked with your confirmation number, which you will receive when submitting your application on line.
