East of Eden - workshopy pro filmaře

North by Northwest otevírá 23. února v Praze svoji kancelář v Perlové ulici č. 1, v 5.patře. Barbora Ondrejčáková bude ve spolupráci s kodaňskou kanceláří koordinovat program zvaný East of Eden. Prodloužený termín k podání projektové dokumentace pro přijetí do worskhopu pro filmové scénáristy, režiséry či producenty je 29.února 2004.

Please have a read through this info of East of Eden:

In this first pilot year, 6 project teams will be selected, each consisting of 1 screenwriter (or a screenwriter / director or a second screenwriter), 1 director and 1 producer.

Working with international tutors with proven industry track records, participants develop their project in their teams, and in screenwriter / director / producer groups. Using the established methodology of North by Northwest's existing programmes - essentially that of a Socratic forum founded on Czech filmmaker Frank Daniel's approach and methodology to training and learning - participants are presented with a series of questions to ask about their project, their ideas and their ambitions.

By focusing firmly on communication, understanding and collaboration between the three key players in the development and production process, and by looking deep into the foundation of the screenwriter's script, the vision of the director, and the business / financial proposal of the producer, participants are equipped with the tools and techniques to analyse, clarify, develop and enrich their material, and maximise the project's potential to secure trans-national funding, to get made and to get seen.

Short presentation of the tutors:
On East of Eden:

  • Morten Arnfred, prolific director and assistant director of feature films (notably Breaking the Waves with Lars von Trier) and TV series; also screenwriter and photographer
  • Sveinbjörn I. Baldvinsson, award winning writer and screenwriter, and screenwriting tutor (former NbyNW Seven Samurai);
  • Lars Hermann, Managing Director of Nordisk Film Post Production, Producer
    & Executive Producer;
  • Ivan MacTaggart, one of the founders of NbyNW, Freelance Executive Producer & Training/Business Affairs Consultant;
  • Miroslav Mandic, award-winning director, screenwriter and tutor of screenwriting and directing at, among others, FAMU and Columbia University;
  • Simon van der Borgh, screenwriter, script consultant and screenwriting tutor (former NbyNW Seven Samurai).

Who can apply for East of Eden:
Team applications are invited from residents of Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. Team members do not need to live in the same country. Each team member must have demonstrable professional experience in their chosen field, be it screenwriting, directing or producing. Workshop dates and venues:
The programme consists of three residential workshops over a six-month period, taking place in Slovenia (April), Spain (June) and Poland (October).

Worskhop I: 19-24 April, Slovenia (in the Bled area)
Workshop II: 21-26 June, Ronda, Spain;
Workshop III: 04-09 October, Poland (venue to be confirmed)

Please note that the location of Workshop 2 is in Ronda, Spain, because the producers of the selected teams will be joining sessions with participants at the Media Business School (producers from all over Europe) who will have their workshops in Ronda. This co-operation between East of Eden and Media Business School is to strenghten the producers possibilities of networking with producers from all over Europe and interact with them in sessions. The screenwriters and directors will have seperate sessions orgainzed by us.

The working language of the workshops is English, although scripts may be written in other languages - East of Eden provides translation into the English language. All groups sessions are audio-recorded so that participants can focus on the content of the discussions and not worry about taking notes.

Participation fees are EUR 1.600 per participant and include all tuition, translation costs and full-board accommodation on all three workshops. Participants organise and pay for their own travel to and from the workshops.

Applicants should not be discouraged from applying due to the level of the fees, as participants are often able to find grants to assist with these costs.

In addition, East of Eden also grants one full scholarship to cover participation fees. Applicants for scholarships should submit a letter of application outlining their situation and need for a grant. Awards will be made to applicants not eligible for national subsidies or where no national training subsidies are available.

East of Eden, with the partnership of FAMU; Slovenian Filmmakers Association; Independent Film Foundation, Poland; Baltic Media Centre Fond; UIP and with additional consultation and support from Estonian Film Foundation; National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts, Bulgaria.

I hope this was helpful information. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me or you can also contact Michal Bregant (Dean of FAMU) if you prefer.
