www.woodstockguild.org/artist-in-residence

The Byrdcliffe Artist in Residence Program provides uninterrupted time, creative space and an inspiring environment to artists of exceptional talent. Month long residencies are available to visual artists, composers, playwrights/screenwriters, and writers of fiction, nonfiction and poetry in the months of June, July, August, and September. It is Byrdcliffe´s mission to provide solitude in a creative community and uninterrupted time in which to concentrate on producing independent and enduring creative work alongside fellow artists.

Opened in 1903, the Byrdcliffe Art Colony was placed on the National Register of Historic Sites in 1979 for its architectural and historical significance. It is located in the Catskill Mountains, 1.5 miles from the center of Woodstock, New York.

Eligibility

Byrdcliffe accepts applications from artists working in the following disciplines: visual arts; fiction, nonfiction and/or poetry; playwrighting and screenwriting; and music composition. The main criterion for acceptance is artistic excellence. Byrdcliffe encourages applications from artists representing the widest possible range of perspectives and demographics, and welcomes artists engaging in the broadest spectrum of artistic practice. To that end, emerging as well as established artists are invited to apply.

Byrdcliffe is committed to a policy of nondiscrimination and equal opportunity for all persons regardless of race, sex, color, religion, creed, national origin or ancestry, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and disability. Byrdcliffe offers ADA compliant access to its main residency building and some studios.

Application guidelines

For all visual artists, music composers, playwrights, and writers of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry:

Each four week session is limited to 10-14 individuals. Candidates may apply for additional weeks in the event a space becomes available. Each session concludes with an
Open Studio where residents share their work with each other and the regional artistic community.

    Session I: June 5 – July 1, 2012
    Session II: July 3 – July 29, 2012
    Session III: August 7 – September 2, 2012
    Session IV: September 4 – September 30, 2012

Residents are chosen by a selection committee of professionals in the arts. The major criterion for acceptance is proof of serious commitment to one’s field of endeavor. Professional recognition is helpful for admission, but is not essential.
